We Have Worms!

Are you looking to start your compost or improve your garden’s soil health?
Worms can be a great addition, but which type should you choose?

Red Wigglers

They’re composting worms, also known as vermicomposting worms, which are not found in the Canadian environment. You can add these worms to your compost worm bin and let them work their magic on your organic waste, turning it into a nutrient-rich soil amendment called vermicompost.

Red Wigglers are the go-to worm for accelerating your composting journey. These little guys love to eat kitchen scraps, fallen leaves and other small organic materials and in turn, produce worm castings for you to place in your gardens and flower pots!

Red Wiggler worms can withstand temperature fluctuations between 5 and 20 so they can be used for both indoor and outdoor worm bins. As long as you continue to feed them organic material, the worm bin will continue to generate enough heat to keep them alive and thriving!

Canadian Nightcrawlers

They live deeper into the ground, their diet consists of plain old inert dirt.

They turn the dirt into castings, deep in the ground at the tap root depth.

They are also great excavators, as they dig their way through the soil, tilling it naturally and leaving a path of nitrogen behind them from the mucous they excrete from their bodies.

They create permanent vertical burrows, sometimes several feet deep, which protect them from predators and extreme temperatures.

During dry or cold seasons, they enter a state called estivation or hibernation, slowing their metabolism dramatically.

Their bodies are also covered in tiny bristles called setae that help them grip the walls of their burrows as they move and that make it possible for individuals to disperse up to twenty meters in a single night.
